Empowering The Airport Experience Through Innovation

.airport: A Public-Benefit, AI-Powered Global Standard for Airport Domain Names

Executive Summary of the .airport project

.airport is being developed as the AI-powered global standard for airport domains.

The project creates a predictable domain structure for travellers, airports, airlines, travel platforms and the wider aviation ecosystem through intuitive domains:

www.ams.airport
www.amsterdam.airport
www.schiphol.airport

will lead to www.schiphol.nl. View the simulated AMS gateway page: www.dotairport.org/ams

.airport is being prepared for the next ICANN application round, with activation targeted for 2028.

From launch, .airport will AI-identify, register and operate the relevant domains for approximately 4,000 airports with scheduled passenger traffic globally.

Until claimed by an airport, each domain will lead through a registry-operated gateway page to the official airport website (example - here).

Passengers and the aviation industry use the infrastructure without charge. Neutral inclusion is initially free for airports.

Airports, or governments acting for their airports, finance the system when they claim and activate their matching .airport packages. Paid participation provides direct routing, third-level domains and email, full control, branded use, public promotion and removal of the neutral gateway page.

Only verified airports can claim .airport domains, and only those matching their own identifiers.

The adoption model has three reinforcing routes. First, pre-activated gateway pages create immediate traveller utility, intuitive type-in traffic and built-in outreach to airport management, digital, marketing, IT and government teams. Second, IATA-code .airport domains enter the existing passenger journey through PNRs, e-tickets, flight confirmations, itineraries, boarding passes and passenger communications. Third, after claim, airports control how their .airport packages are used through gateway pages, direct forwarding, campaigns or as primary public domains.

Together, these routes establish .airport as trusted digital aviation infrastructure: improving traveller access to official airport information, supporting airport digital transformation and giving airports a structured domain system for their official identifiers.
